Community council meeting agenda 01/22/2012
Here are some of the items we'll talk about at the next meeting.
Please read recent discussions at http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk. Once you're there, join the group. And once you've joined the group, join the conversation! Please feel free to add to any of the discussions, or start a new one.
The agenda for the previous meeting is at http://codex.freegeekchicago.org/wiki/MeetingAgenda/2012-01-08. The notes for the previous meeting are at http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/4c3e24566c809436.
Introduce yourself (standing item)
- (Who's taking the minutes?)
(Everybody, say your name)
- (Who are the eligible voters?)
Add agenda items (standing item)
(Besides the things later in the agenda, what else should we talk about?)
- ...
- ...
Announcements (standing item)
(Any announcements that don't require action or discussion can go here.)
- Standing reminder: there will be a 10-minute time limit to all topic discussions. If by then no solution is found, the topic will be tabled until the next meeting.
- Reminder: FreeGeek Chicago will have a table at the Logan Square Market on the second Sunday of each month for the next few months. The next one is February 13th.(and will be over by the time the meeting starts).
- This Sunday, weather permitting, Beth will demonstrate a working prototype of a sign that will feature photographs of the key people who make Free Geek happen. More at: http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/7915e902ccb73a5f.
- Date for Spring Retreat: May 5th, Cinco De Mayo, at the Bucktown Public Library.
- Date for the Constitutional Convention: February 25th, at Free Geek, in the classroom.
Reports (standing items)
staff meeting recap
- Alex, it's on you!
money report
- We presently have $10,411 and change in our bank account. (All bills are paid up). Mo-Money, Mo-Money!!
laptop report
- Aaron has struggled with keeping order in the laptop room. Once he is done cleaning up, volunteers can come in the outer laptop room and do sorting and teardown of junked laptops.
- No laptops for sale, yet!
- Warning! Don't put anything in the leaky corner of the outer laptop room! It leaks when it warms up in the wintertime.
orientation/education team report
- Susan is still seeking teachers for "Freeform Classes" being held on Sundays from 3-4:30PM during Open Build. Submit your outline to Susan via email, anytime!
- Orientation class size is becoming an issue, (more instructors/more sessions)? This was tabled from last meeting.
- Two other topics were added to Staff's discussion: (a) We need a "Computing Basics" class for those with very limited technical skills (and there are a lot of people like this in our Build program). (b) Should we get a divider and split the classroom in half during big orientation days?
web report/analytics & Townsquare
- Aaron will add Google Analytics to our website.
- Alex and Dave will study our site logs and make a report to the community about our website traffic over the last few years (and will also check the stats on our Facebook page).
- Townsquare: Dave Eads is building a volunteer credit system (that keeps track of a volunteer's credit based on their number of hours). He will present it to Community Council in 2 weeks time so that they can vote on it.
- The next alpha build of Townsquare will be out next week. Dave has simplified the hours interface so that volunteers can't rubberneck and complain ("Come on man, I had more hours last Sunday than that..")!
video report
Charles Downer sent a message using the contact form at http://freegeekchicago.org/contact/general-feedback/General%20Inquiry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHbRBlCKmDc
This is one of my in-line skate videos.....I am the spindoctor.....I brought this concept in to reality.........AND YA ITS ME!!!!
space report
- We need a projector screen for the classroom. Showing slides on a painted wall can be hard to read. (Bob R. recommends using reaalllly good paint.)
- Aaron and James will compile a list of "I wish we had" items, then consult more with Bob Stein, as he has been doing the bulk of cleaning up and organizing the space/warehouse.
- Francis and Bob R. have some ideas:
MobileCitizen (presentation)
John Holmer, director of MobileCitizen Chicago, will tell about an opportunity to provide FreeGeek volunteers with very inexpensive Internet.
Social media (old item)
- James sez, give us all your 140 character messages and we will post them. Short and pilthy is preferred.
- Alex invites you to join the fun here: http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/12922e6caa44d267#
E-waste laws (old item)
- Justin was not at our last CC meeting to give his findings.
- James, however has called the Illinois EPA with some questions about the local E-waste laws, and how they apply to FreeGeek. Someone high up in the office told him that FreeGeek needs to register with them.
This means:
- We need to pay $505, and there is no deadline or penalty, but we must do it this year.
- There are compliance requirements (we need to fill out plenty of paperwork). We need to declare what items we accept, how many items we take at once and what fees we charge.
- There are requirements to provide certain conditions for our paid staff and volunteers.
- We may need to provide certain kinds of training for our staff and volunteers.
- We may need a new insurance policy ($$$?).
- We can't charge money from households, only businesses.
- We are simultaneously a collector, a refurbisher, and a recycler under the law, so there are many other requirements. James is researching it, and will consult with some legal people we know.
As written, the current law is not clear for and not supportive of small recycling organizations like FreeGeek. We may need to do some lobbying of the city if it interferes too much with our operations.
Discount policy (old item)
DavE is yet working out a proposal that we can vote on in two weeks. This will include $75.00 credit for (25) volunteer hours and $1.00 per hour afterwards.
Repair policy/waiver (old item)
James has come up with a waiver form (for basic warranty repairs only). He's working on a waiver for data recovery work, and a warranty form. He might consult with FreeGeek Portland about this.
LPIC study group (old item)
Alex, James, Ky and some other members of FreeGeek are starting a study group for the Linux Professional Institute's LPI certification. They will make an announcement about it on Sunday at community council.
Outreach (new item)
- WZRD FM 88.9 has offered to make a 30-second PSA for us, and play it on their station (which is in Indiana and covers most of the Northwest side). The Community Council needs to come up with a paragraph for them to work with.
- James brought in the executive director of the local branch of the Chamber of Commerce and his chief technician for a tour of the space recently. They are buying some stuff from us, and have offered:
- to do a survey of Chamber members free of charge on our behalf.
- to invite James to a meet-and-greet with some local lawyers (so we can get some free-to-low-cost legal advice when we need it).
- Terri will post about FreeGeek on the local Yahoo group for Logan Square.
HPC recycling (new item)
HPC (an electronics company) would like to give us boxes of defective circuit boards and wire harnesses to recycle. The community council needs to approve this.
Printers (new item)
Francis and Bob R. have some ideas about printers.
- Francis points out we can donate printer cartridges to "We Need Ink To Help Us Think!" via DonorsChose.org, http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=707696&utm_source=dc&utm_campaign=facebook&utm_medium=projectpage.
- They agree we can do a better job with printer scrapping and the organization of the printer test area, https://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/ae2e0292145ea41e/4fbeb7e73b5cc27c?lnk=gst&q=francis#4fbeb7e73b5cc27c.
2012 (new item)
It's 2012. We're living in the future! DavE asks you to think about FreeGeek Chicago's future at https://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/d7ffe12e7ae12bdc.
Added agenda items (standing item)
(Don't forget the items that were added at the beginning of the meeting.)
- ...
- ...
- ...
Date of next meeting (standing item)
February 19, 2012 (Not 2/05 as previously announced, due to Super Bowl conflict.)
Shout-outs (standing item)
("What's Good" and "Damn the Man")
- Janet gives a shout-out to all staff members for 100% attendance in 2012!
- Terri gives a shout-out to Jamaica for kickin' Alex out of their country!
