Community council meeting agenda 12/18/2011

Here are some of the items we'll talk about at the next meeting.

Please read recent discussions at  http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk. Once you're there, join the group. And once you've joined the group, join the conversation! Please feel free to add to any of the discussions, or start a new one.

The agenda for the previous meeting is at http://codex.freegeekchicago.org/wiki/MeetingAgenda/2011-12-04. The minutes for the previous meeting are at  https://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/56e06176bce3d8bf.

Introduce yourself (standing item)

(Everybody, say your name)

  • ...
  • ...
  • (Who's taking the minutes?)
  • (Who are the eligible voters?)
  • (Are the lights on?)

Add agenda items (standing item)

(Besides the things later in the agenda, what else should we talk about?)

  • ...
  • ...

Announcements (standing item)

(Any announcements that don't require action or discussion can go here.)

  • Standing reminder: there will be a 10-minute time limit to all topic discussions. If by then no solution is found, the topic will be tabled until the next meeting.
  • Christmas Party at FreeGeek, Friday, December 23rd during open-build hours (11:00 AM to 5:00 PM). Bring a food dish if it's convenient!
  • We will be closed to public for the holidays, from Dec. 24th to Jan. 3rd, 2012
  • Reminder: FreeGeek Chicago will have a table at the Logan Square Market on the second Sunday of each month for the next few months. The next one is Jan. 8th.

Reports (standing items)

staff meeting recap

Dave or Aaron has this.

money report

We've received $9,964 from SiPi for circuit recycling (mo-money, mo-money!). After bills we have $10,633 in the bank (but we're waiting to be billed from SSI for last mixed recycling run).

laptop report

Aaron sez: The laptop room will remain closed for weekend clean-up. Possibly, no there will be no more laptops for sale until after Christmas.

  • After clean-up, the outer room will be set up for tasks of:
    • tear-down
    • triage
    • refurbishing
    • soldering
  • The inner room for:
    • repairs
    • testing
    • storage
  • Axel is the floor manager in Aaron's absence.

education team report

  • Susan asks, "Can you teach?" Freeform classes are being held on Sundays from 3-4:30 PM during Open Build days (Friday and Sunday). Submit your outline to Susan via email.
  • Only regular volunteers (who have had orientation) can take classes at FreeGeek.
  • Justin is working on a soldering class.

video report

Calvin has fessed up to having our video equipment and said he'll return it when he get the chance.

E-Waste (old item)

We tabled this topic last CC meeting. There are federal grants available to support E-waste recycling. Most grants found were for companies that exceed 1000 tons a year.

Justin has asked for more time to talk with some junkyard owner who knows about grants for small e-waste recyclers (like us). He didn't find out much, but he'll keep asking around.

Classroom / facilities (old item)

  • The classroom is DONE. Looks great. James and Ky put in furniture and ran ethernet back there.
  • Izzy has moved hanging outlets and conduit. Last tasks: Fix ballast in laptop room, and fix 24/7 switch.

Data transfer (old item)

James is still looking into pricing for data transfer. He's considering around $10 (Eads thinks that's way too low).

Repair policy (old item)

We will rewrite our repair policy to cover items under 1-year warranty (only), and add it to all sales sheets. New changes will include:

  • Repairs will not be completed during Build.
  • We don't repair devices that were not purchased at Freegeek.
  • Repairs, unless very minor, will not be done immediately. We will hold devices for inspection, give owners a repair receipt, and contact the owners within 48 hours.
  • If your device has been left at FreeGeek for longer than 45 days, it becomes the property of FreeGeek.
  • Devices that have been damaged in an extraordinary way (such as dropped or immersed in liquid) cannot be repaired.

Volunteer discounts (old item)

The discussion continues:

  • Dave's idea: give staff discretion in not allowing people to apply discount towards laptops, but other staffers said "Bad idea!" Other thoughts are:
    • Roll-over: X months / years after signup date.
    • $1/hr to keep things easy.
  • The final proposal will be written by Dave and posted on the Google talk list, to be voted on Jan 8.

Get your ideas in soon.

Social media help (new item)

Alex appealed to the general public for social media help. Read more at  http://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/42cb3e3f66df182e#

ComEd (new item)

Our new meter is in place but ComEd hasn't switched us over. Our upcoming bill might be big, because the meter is running.

CLEAR Internet (new item)

“Mobile Citizen”: We are eligible to get more accounts in our name, and renew our present account for another year.

Added agenda items (standing item)

(Don't forget the items that were added at the beginning of the meeting.)

  • ...
  • ...
  • ...

Date of next meeting (standing item)

(usually in 2 weeks) January 8, 2012

Shout-outs (standing item)

("What's Good" and "Damn the Man")

  • Janet gives a Shout-out to staff & all volunteers: "We're unbeatable"!!
