Space

We have a whole mess of perennial problems. Bob R. has a bunch of ideas.  https://groups.google.com/group/freegeekchicago-talk/browse_thread/thread/8b25461f019ed849/21183a0643c4c81c?lnk=gst

Streamline the layout

  • get the "install" tables out of the front area
  • redo the "admin" station by the back door
  • get the big shelves out of the center of the testing, build and teardown areas
  • get rid of the desk next to the shelves in the front area
  • set up the store properly
  • have a proper entrance

De-clutter

  • consolidate the clutter behind the second fence
  • secure the parts area
  • set up a parts counter
  • build modular workbenches

Improve appearance and safety

  • paint the place
  • improve the lighting
  • go over every strung wire in the place

Education

Improving orientation

Split intros to hardware & process

Overcrowding

Should we require sign-ups for major program areas?: Orientation, Teardown, Build, etc.?

Classes

The classroom will be ready soon. What classes should we offer?

Intro to Ubuntu on Sundays

At FreeGeek Portland, it's mandatory!

People

Our continued growth means we need more people. Changes in our physical layout imply more roles and better-defined roles. We need to define the roles and figure out how to fill them.

Floor captains / area leads

  • Current roles: Orientation, Build, Teardown, Test, Install
  • Additional roles: Front Desk, Store(?), Parts, Laptops

New staff

We currently have 4 (I think). Five to seven is ideal.

Interns

FreeTime + Enthusiasm + Supervision ==> Experience + Achievment

Recruiting

We always need more techie volunteers.

"Career Paths"

The traditional way to move up at FGC has been: show up and be competent, then attend meetings and have a lot to say. We need to better recognize and encourage folks who are quiet or can't make it to meetings.

Communication

We always need more people, more money, and more laptops. How can we get the word out?

Townsquare

It's DavE's community-building tool. It will include profiles, hours-tracking, a wiki, and more. He'll demo it to a captive audience after lunch.
