Boot Process Self-Study Resources
- System Boot Process from pcguide.com: This is a good, basic guide that covers what the computer's doing from power on to the end of the BIOS's role in the boot process. This summary contains links to more detailed entries on the individual steps of the process.
- The Master Boot Record (MBR) and What it Does from dewassoc.com: This is almost identical to pcguide.com's article. In fact, it's pretty certain one of them ripped off the other. Either way, the writing here is a little cleaner and the it has more fine detail on the MBR.
- Inside the Linux Boot Process from IBM's Developer Works. This article picks up (more or less) where the previous two leave off, detailing the various steps between the reading of the MBR and the initialization of the GNU/Linux userspace. tl&dr: What happens between the end of the BIOS and (almost) the login screen.
- Computer Boot Sequence from mossywell.com. This is *really* technical and focuses on the specifics of the hard drive and where the different components of the boot process are stored and how they get talked to. This is over my (Ben's) head by a couple of body-lengths. Enjoy if you dare!
